Before making these with your children
The ornaments look like candy so make sure your children know they
CAN NOT be eaten.
Materials. Borax, Hot Water, Pipe Cleaners, different Shaped Cookie Cutters, Thin Ribbon or String, Popsicle Sticks, Mason Jars, or any jar with a wide opening and holds more than 2 cups of water.
What to do
Start by making different shapes with the pipe cleaners. It may be easier to use small cookie cutters as a guide. Cut excess pipe cleaner.
Tie the ribbon onto the shape. Hang the string over a popsicle stick, and dangle the shapes inside jars. For best results, two shapes work best. Make sure the shapes dangle freely without touching the bottom of the jar, the sides, or each other. Mix equal parts boiling water and borax. Pour mixture into the jars until the tops of the stars are covered. The crystals will grow on the ribbon as well, so fill the jars up to the shapes.
Just in case anything spills, clean up very quickly or you will grow crystals on your countertop. Please be careful borax is abrasive. I would recommend putting jars on a cookie sheet or plastic table cloth. You will see them crystalizing in a few hours, for best results keep overnight. Take out of the jar and lay them out on a paper towel to dry.
They look so pretty hanging in the window or tree.
